scythe: [OE] Scythe goes back ultimately to the Indo-European base *sek- ‘cut’, source also of English section, segment, sickle, etc. Its Germanic descendant was *seg-, which produced the noun *segithō, source of English scythe (the variant *sag- lies behind English saw).
